Booklist – Round One

Day one of SBL’s book exhibit is on in full force… well… its on. The size of the exhibit seems quite smaller compared to years past. Also, some smaller publishers who normally are present are not, like my friends at EKS. Surprisingly, Thomas Nelson is not here either. And as expected, any past publisher that targeted AAR is of course absent. Sorry guys, no Buddhist table this year.

But on to what you’re looking for: prices for our booklist. Should I buy books at the meeting, or order them off Amazon (or whichever online bookstore you like)? Here’s the info collected in round one. Not all books in the intial list are here. But there will be a round two. The first price listed is from Amazon, the second SBL.

Baylor University Press
Marion Ann Taylor and Heather E. Weir. Let Her Speak for Herself: Nineteenth-Century Women Writing Women in Genesis. Baylor: Waco, 2006. $44.94 or $26.94 at the meeting.

Brill
Brill was having computer trouble when I asked for prices. I will try later, but I was happy to hear that they would like to know the Amazon price for their titles as they would like to be competitive. In one of Brill’s representatives words “Amazon doesn’t wanna help students. We do.”

Cambridge Univ Press
They couldn’t give me prices on books they don’t physically have with them (even though everyone else with a laptop could). But the 20% discount is good thru the new year. It doesn’t surprise me that they couldn’t give me the info. I’ve studied at Cambridge (Summer Hebrew Ulpan 2006) and despite the great scholarship that abounds, technologically forward thinking does not.

Eerdmans
Allen, L C 1976. The Books of Joel, Obediah, Jonah and Micah. (The New International Comentary of the Old Testament) Grand Rapids, Michigan: Eerdmans. $18.95 or $30.80 at the meeting.

Kyle McCarter, P 1986. Textual Criticism. Recovering the Text of the Hebrew Bible. Philadephia: Fortress Press. $6.93 or $9.80 at the meeting.

Oxford Univ Press
Cruse, D A 2004. Meaning in Language. An Introduction to Semantics and Pragmatics. (Oxford Textbooks in Linguistics Oxford: Oxford University Pres. $24.69 or $44.00 at the meeting.

SBL
Kaltner, J and McKenzie S L (eds.) 2002. Beyond Babel: A Handbook for Biblical Hebrew and Related Languages. Atlanta: Socitey of Biblical Literature. $29.65 or $19.00 at the meeting.

“Cruse, A D” should read “Cruse, D A,” and by the way, that’s an excellent book on semantics.

So, a significant proportion of the booksellers are charging more at the meeting than their normal prices, or did you not proofread carefully?

    Thanks.

    Judy,

Which booksellers and books are you talking about? The comparison is not between normal and meeting prices, but used-book Amazon prices and meeting prices. Did you read carefully?
